Keyboard Tray for a Desk With a Crossbar: What to Measure First
Links and money. Purple Whale is not enrolled in the Amazon Associates program, and earns nothing from these links. The links to maker pages and Amazon below are ordinary links, so you can check each tray before buying. If that changes, this page will say so before any link is replaced. Prices below were read on 2026-10-16 and change without notice.
Many standing desks have a steel crossbar under the top, joining the two legs. Say a sliding tray needs 16 inches of flat underside and the crossbar sits 12 inches back from the front edge: it will not fit. Five trays are compared here, using the dimensions their makers and Amazon listings publish, so you can rule trays out with a tape measure before ordering.
Measure these three things
- Front edge to crossbar. Measure along the underside of the desktop, from the front edge straight back to the crossbar. This is the depth a sliding track has to fit inside.
- Desktop thickness. Two of the listings below state a minimum (over 0.6 inch for HUANUO, at least 0.6 inch for Mount-It!) and VIVO's clamp model states a range (0.5 to 1.25 inches).
- Clear width. The space between legs, frame columns or motor housings where the tray and its brackets will sit. The trays below ask for between 25 and 33 inches.
Three ways a tray can mount
1. Clamps on the front edge of the desktop
The VIVO MOUNT-KB05E grips the desktop edge with C-clamps and needs no screws into the underside. It sits 1.5 to 2.75 inches below the desk surface, and its track is 12.3 inches long (VIVO product page).
- What to check
- VIVO's Amazon listing says the desktop "should be clear of crossbars or other supports in the intended clamp installation location". Neither page says how far back the 12.3-inch track can reach before it meets a crossbar, so measure that yourself. The listing caps desktop thickness at 1.25 inches and gives 32.5 inches as the width from clamp to clamp.

2. A shallow track screwed to the underside, ahead of the crossbar
The HUANUO HNKB03 mounts on the underside of the desktop. Its Amazon listing asks for 14.17 inches of clearance for the track, and 16.22 inches if you want the tray to slide fully under the desk.
- What to check
- Clearance below 14.17 inches rules this tray out. Between 14.17 and 16.21 inches it mounts, but the front of the tray stays out past the desk edge when pushed in. The listing asks for a desktop over 0.6 inch thick and at least 25 inches of side clearance. It gives no reason for the thickness figure.
- Model
- HUANUO HNKB03 (ASIN B08CKZJ2WT). On 2026-10-16 the HUANUO site showed both the black and the white version as unavailable.

3. Long tracks, which a crossbar close to the front edge blocks
The VIVO MOUNT-KB01 (track 18 inches on the VIVO page) and the Mount-It! MI-7139 (slides out 18 inches) need a long clear run under the desktop. VIVO sells a separate drop bracket, the MOUNT-SPACER01, but no saved page says it works with either tray or what the pair costs, so this page does not recommend either combination.
- Track length
- The VIVO KB01 lists an 18-inch track on both its official product page and its Amazon listing.
- Listings
- VIVO KB01: Maker page · Amazon. Mount-It! MI-7139: Maker page · Amazon.
- Mount-It! says
- Its Amazon listing names wood or MDF desktops at least 0.6 inch thick and says the MI-7139 is not meant for glass, metal or crossbar desks.
The Kensington K60004US is a fourth design: a drawer on side brackets, 16 inches deep overall and 31 to 33 inches wide at the brackets. No saved page states how far back its brackets reach, so whether a crossbar interferes is for you to check against your own desk. On 2026-10-16 the Kensington page listed it as no longer available; Amazon may still list it.

Every figure comes from the maker's page or the Amazon listing named under the table. A cell reads "Not found" when none of the pages I saved states it. Prices are maker-site prices read on 2026-10-16, not Amazon prices.

Pages read on 2026-10-16: vivo-us.com (MOUNT-KB05E and MOUNT-KB01 product pages), huanuo.com (HNKB03 page), kensington.com (SmartFit under-desk keyboard drawer page), mount-it.com (MI-7139 page), and the Amazon.com listings for each ASIN in the table. Amazon showed non-USD prices to the crawler I used, so no Amazon price is quoted.
Work through your desk in this order
- Front edge to crossbar. Under 14.17 inches: the HNKB03 will not go in ahead of the crossbar. The KB05E is the one tray here that needs no screw zone, though its clamp spots must be free of crossbars and its 12.3-inch track needs room under the desk. From 14.17 to 16.21 inches the HNKB03 mounts and sticks out when pushed in. At 16.22 inches or more it slides fully under.
- Desktop thickness. The HNKB03 needs over 0.6 inch and the KB05E takes 0.5 to 1.25 inches. For the other three trays the saved pages give a thickness only for the MI-7139.
- Clear width. Keep 25 inches free of legs, frame columns and motor housings for the HNKB03, or 32.5 inches for the KB05E with its clamps.
Four made-up desks
These desks are invented to show how the checks combine. None is a real model.
- Desk A: crossbar 15.0" from the front, top 1.0" thick, 30.0" of clear width. The HNKB03 mounts, since 15.0" is over 14.17". It falls 1.22" short of the 16.22" needed to slide fully under, so the tray front stays out by about that much.
- Desk B: crossbar 18.0" back, top 0.4" thick, 30.0" wide. Depth is fine, but 0.4" is under the HNKB03's 0.6" minimum.
- Desk C: crossbar 18.0" back, top 1.0" thick, only 24.0" between the inner leg columns. The HNKB03 asks for at least 25.0".
- Desk D: crossbar 20.0" back, top 1.2" thick, hollow honeycomb core. No saved page covers hollow-core tops. Mount-It! lists wood or MDF as the supported kind, so ask the maker before screwing into one.
About this page
Purple Whale compiled it from the pages listed under the table. It is not a hands-on test: nobody here has installed these trays. A mistake in a figure or a changed price can be reported through the contact form linked in the footer, and the page will be corrected. The next full re-check of the prices and specs is due four weeks after publication.
